Creativity in Action for Adolescents
Studio Coyote is 3 terms of 20-hour workshops for adolescents aged 10 – 14 in out-of-school time:
7 weeks of weekends in the fall and winter/spring terms, and intensive week-long sessions in the summer. Professionals in creative fields teach the workshops in private studios and professional workplaces throughout central Seattle.
Studio Coyote participants learn technical, creative, and problem-solving skills as they tackle hands-on projects in apprenticeship-like settings. They learn to reflect on and evaluate their work as they develop both technical skills and confidence in their ability to find their own solutions.

Talented professionals, including chefs, filmmakers, actors, architects, web designers, glassblowers, lawyers, welders, glassblowers, and singers teach the Studio Coyote courses. They share their expert skills and know-how, modeling for adolescents both their passion for their work and their perseverance in its practice. Participants get a rare glimpse of what it means to be a professional in a creative discipline at an age when they are starting to question who they might become.
Participants might weld in a metal shop, debate in a courtroom, animate a cartoon in a media lab, whip up a cream puff in a commercial kitchen, or produce a hip hop riff with a music producer. With student/teacher ratios as low as 8:1, they become filmmakers, hot glass artists, photographers, welders, pastry chefs, video and digital animators, writers, fashion designers, painters and more.
Over 10,000 Seattle-area kids have taken part in Coyote since it was founded in 1986. Studio Coyote workshops reflect the diversity of Seattle public school students, in ethnicity, neighborhood, culture, academic achievement, family structure, and life experience. During the school year, many participants enroll through their own initiative, supported by Coyote’s close ties with many schools throughout Seattle. With the help of school personnel and youth service agencies, Coyote also recruits harder to reach youth to make Studio Coyote a valuable resource for all kids.
